Tongue and mouth burns
What is it?
Tongue and mouth burning is a burning, sometimes painful sensation on the tongue and/or oral mucosa, with no visible abnormalities in the mouth. People between the ages of 40 and 70 experience it most often. Women get it more often than men.
How does it manifest itself?
- Burning or hot sensation in the tongue, mouth, palate, lips or cheeks
- Dry mouth
- Changed or diminished taste
- Symptoms often worsen during the day, sometimes peaking in the evening
The cause of tongue and mouth burns
No specific cause can be found in most individuals. Possible contributors are:
- Medicine
- Reduced saliva production
- Stress or psychological strain
- Materials in the teeth (such as fillings, dentures)
- Nutrient deficiencies (such as B vitamins)
Diagnosis
A thorough oral examination is important to rule out other causes. When no abnormalities are found, we speak of primary mouth or tongue burning.
Treatment and prognosis
Because the cause is often unknown, there is no standard treatment. The symptoms pass spontaneously in some people; in others, they may persist for months or years. Some measures can provide relief:
Dietary adjustments (avoiding hot, sharp or acidic foods)
Quitting smoking
Stress-reducing measures
Supplements or drug therapies for proven deficiencies
