Apex resection

What does the treatment involve?

An apex resection is a surgical procedure in which the root tip of a tooth, along with inflammatory tissue, is removed. This is done when a root canal treatment has not produced complete results.

How does the treatment proceed?

1.

Anaesthetic

The procedure takes place under local anaesthesia, so that the area to be treated is completely numb. As a result, you will experience no pain during treatment and the procedure will be as comfortable as possible.

2.

Access

The surgeon makes a small opening in the gum and slides it aside. A drill is used to access the root tip.

3.

Treatment

Inflammatory tissue is removed and the root tip is shortened. This is sealed with a filling material if necessary.

4.

Adhesion

The wound is sutured with dissolvable sutures. An X-ray is usually taken immediately after the procedure for verification.

5.

Check

Success is usually assessed after about six months via an X-ray to see if the jawbone has recovered.
